Improving Your Mindset
Is your attitude towards exercise affecting your ability to commit to a regular routine? Sometimes a change in the way we look at fitness is what we need to have a good relationship with it…
It’s understandable that exercise may not be your No.1 favourite activity - not all of us have the same relationship with fitness and that’s okay! However if you are looking to improve your health and wellbeing, then having the right attitude and mindset is important.
What to think about when it comes to fitness…
If you don’t enjoy exercise then the first thing you need to consider is what you are hoping to gain from it, whether that is better strength, feeling fitter and healthier, building confidence - it’s good to be clear on exactly what you want as this will help you build the right routine.
Secondly, you need to think about how you approach exercise - whatever form it takes. If you go into a session with a negative attitude, assuming that it’s going to be hard and you won’t enjoy it, then the likelihood is that you will have a negative experience. However if you were to go in with the attitude that even though you aren’t looking forward to it - it might be better than you expected, you are already one step closer to having a more positive experience.
Ignoring what your head might be telling you…
The other battle you might have is trying to ignore what your brain might be telling you. A good example of this is when you are about to try a new exercise, your brain might be telling you that you can’t do it and you’re going to fail - which might lead you to feel negative and not want to try.
If we want to overcome this we need to use strategies to avoid those negative thoughts taking over - some simple things you could say to yourself are:
“Even if I can’t do it - at least I’ve tried”
“I’ll never know if I don’t attempt it”
“Not everything happens straight away”
Having a positive outlook when you exercise will help you to push yourself more and build confidence - improving your relationship with exercise!
