The Benefits of Bodyweight Training

We all love to feel strong right? However it’s easy to think that the only way to get stronger is to use resistance machines or dumbbells when in fact there are multiple ways of building muscle mass - bodyweight training being one of the key methods.

What is a bodyweight exercise?

Bodyweight exercises are ones that do not include any added resistance from free weights or machines. You use your own body strength to do the movement. Examples of bodyweight exercises include:

  • Squats

  • Lunges

  • Press Ups

  • Planks

  • Wall sits

  • Glute Bridge

  • Mountain Climbers

And that’s just to name a few!

Why include bodyweight exercises as part of your workout?

  1. To build joint strength and mobility

  2. Usually bodyweight training means a higher rep range - this will increase your stamina and fitness

  3. to build muscle mass

  4. you can include them any time, anywhere - no need for the gym!

  5. they are harder than they look making them a great way to challenge yourself during workouts

How often should I include bodyweight exercises in my sessions?

Try to include at least 1-2 bodyweight movements during your sessions to add variety. If you really wanted to challenge yourself you could create a circuit of bodyweight movements to make it a sweaty session!
