Finding Your Feet in Health and Fitness

i

Exercising is a different experience for everyone, we all have our preferred way to move and keep active and sometimes it’s hard to know whether we are progressing and challenging ourselves enough. Whether you are just starting out with an exercise programme, or looking to change things up and challenge yourself more, here’s our guide to finding your feet with fitness.

Our Guide for Beginners

Knowing where to start when it comes to exercise is not easy, especially when you haven’t quite found what works best for you yet, so here are our top tips for finding your feet as a beginner:

  • Think about what you enjoy doing, it could be anything such as walking the dog, going dancing, stretching, use this as a starting place and try to match it to something you could do at home or in the gym. For example if you really enjoy stretching out and feeling a good tension release in the body, a yoga or flexibility class might be good for you, if you enjoy being outside then along walk or hike might be the way forward! Try to think about what you enjoy, exercising should be something we feel good doing!

  • Try something at least 5 times before giving up. Nothing is easy the first time, but it’s important to give something more than one chance as your body will need time to adjust. A good way to do this is to book 5 sessions in advance, such as personal training. See how you feel after those 5 and you may feel differently to week 1!

  • Chat with professionals! We are here to help, when you don’t know where to start it’s useful to have people give you some ideas on what you might like. If you are thinking of using a programme we can advise you on the one that will suit you best.

Our Guide for progressing your workout

Thinking it’s time to switch up your workout? Here are our top tips for advancing your exercise routine:

  • Have a check in with a personal trainer, this is a great way to review your progress and seek some next steps

  • Try changing the style of your workout, for example if you often use a strength based programme, trying switching to endurance to work your body in a different way

  • Keep a balance of upper / lower /ab based workouts, often we work on the same muscle groups too often without balancing through the body. Even if you don’t enjoy leg day - it’s still important!
