The Benefits Of Yoga For Athletes

Yoga is all about breath work and meditation - FALSE

This is a common myth associated with yoga practise and one that can be off putting to those who are thinking of giving it a go. The physical postures or ‘asanas’ as we call them in practise have many benefits for the body including building strength in the joints, muscle recovery and improving flexibility making it a great pairing for sports and gym goers.

Why include yoga?

If you feel you struggle with basic mobility and flexibility, including a yoga session once a week will make a big improvement to your bodies ability to move better. It will improve the strength in your joints which will lead to all round improved technique in the gym and in sports.

How can yoga help me with recovery?

The stretches and poses we use in yoga practise will help ease muscles from the the strains of our workouts and exercise. The poses and stretches used in yoga help to increase the stretch in the muscles that have worked during exercise and increase the speed of recovery.

Fun fact! The England squad use yoga as part of their recovery routine in between matches!

I’m a beginner - will I struggle?

Nothing comes easily to begin with, whilst you may not find yoga straightforward for the first session, know that a weekly commitment will see a big improvement!

Where can I practise yoga?

There are many ways to practise yoga now including online which makes it easy to fit into your week! However if you are a complete beginner we would recommend attending a class so you have an instructor who can help you!
